repaso defining non-defining

1.- We can't take out the relative pronoun to understand the sentence.
Sally is the student whose marks are always the best.

2.- We can take out the relative pronoun to understand the sentence.
I understand the problem that you have.

3.-We can use that instead of which.
It's a journey which takes about 10 hours.

4.- The relative clause is separated from the whole sentence by commas.
Kerala, which is an independent state, is well developed.

5.- We can't use that instead of who.
Mary, who is my best friend, lives in Melbourne.

6.- The relative clause isn't separated from the whole sentence by commas.
Northern Ireland is the country where my family live.

non-defining relative clauses

- My French friends live in Paris. They study English.

- My French friends, who live in Paris, study English.
- My French friends, who study English, live in Paris

-  Many students of 2º work hard. They will pass the exam.

- Many students of 2º, who work hard, will pass the exam.
- Many students of 2º, who will pass the exam, work hard.

defining - non-defining (2)

Tamara has two cats. Both of them are black.
- Tamara's two cats which don't drink water are black. (defining)
 (no tengo que explicar que son los dos que no beben agua, ya que no tiene más gatos)
- Tamara's two cats, which don't drink water, are black. (non-defining)
(hablo de los dos gatos negros de Tamara y, además, digo que no beben agua)


Kevin has four dogs. Two of them are white
- Kevin's two dogs which are white can play football. (defining)
 (hablo sólo de los 2 perros que son blancos y digo que pueden jugar al fútbol)
- Kevin's two dogs, which are white, can play football. (non-defining)
 (como tiene 4 perros tendría que definir cuáles son los dos que juegan al futbol)

My brother who lives in Sidney came to see me last month. (defining)
(tengo más hermanos y especifico que el que vino a verme es el que vive en Sidney)
My brother, who lives in Sidney, came to see me last month. (non-defining)
(mi hermano vino a verme y, además, informo de que vive en Sidney) 


I have one sister
My sister who is 25 years old spent her holiday in France. (defining)
(si sólo tengo una hermana no es necesario especificar que es la que tiene 25 años)
My sister, who is 25 years old, spent her holiday in France. (non-defining)
(mi hermana pasó sus vacaciones en Francia y,además, digo que tiene 25 años)

oraciones de relativo - DEFINING / NON-DEFINING

 DEFINING (especificativas)
definen a la persona, objeto o lugar al que nos referimos

* no va entre comas
* that puede sustituir a who o which
* se puede omitir el pronombre relativo si funciona como objeto

- The person who / that teaches is a teacher.
- The book (that) you bought is expensive.


NON-DEFINING (explicativas)
información adicional a la oración principal y podría omitirse sin afectar al significado

* va entre comas
* el pronombre relativo no puede omitirse
* who o which no pueden ser cambiados por that.

- Your friend, who is French, will come with us.
- The English book, which is not cheap, is very interesting.
